Michael Madhusudan Dutt was a Bengali poet, dramatist, and essayist who was born on January 25, 1824, in Sagardari, Jessore, British India (now Bangladesh). He is considered one of the pioneers of modern Bengali literature and was the first to write Bengali plays in the style of European plays. He was the son of a lawyer and was educated at Hindu College, Calcutta (now Kolkata), and the University of Calcutta.
